Anger emotion and his percetion

Background of anger

Anger is a dangerous emotion, active and often impulsive. Some reactions in extreme anger are not controlled from the person who feel it. The main goal of this emotion was to prepare the person for aggressive handling. Part of the experience of this emotion is the risk of losing control. The source of frustration can be a subject, object or a situation. There are four major source of this feeling: frustration, physical threat, someone’s action or statement and occasioned by observing someone do something which violates your dearly held moral values.

Intensity of emotion

Anger varies in intensity, from slight irritation or annoyance to rage or fury. It may build gradually, starting with irritation and slowly accumulating, or it may occur suddenly, full-blown. Some peoples enjoy to be angry or to receive physical treatment. In some cases the intimacy can be established or reestablished by a vigorous angry exchange between two people.

Perception in facial expressions

There are major changes in three facial areas by anger facial expression.

The eyebrows are lowered and drawn together, the eyelids are tensed, and the eye appears to stare in a hard fashion. The lips are either tightly pressed together or parted in a square shape. Often is the upper face expression confused with sadness or surprise. The picture below explain the differences:

The upper face show a typical anger brow, pushed together with some vertical wrinkles between the brows. The inner corner of brows are pushed down, not like on other 3 faces. The down eyelid is tensed, not like in surprise (middle face) or on sadness (bottom face). If is only the anger brow presented, but the other part of face are not involved, this mean that is the anger controlled or is in the beginning stage. If the anger brow appear only for a part of second (micro expression) is almost a not sign of a real anger but describe the emotion about the words that are spoken by this expression.

The main difference in eyelids are presented in downer eyelid. In anger is the downer eyelid tensed, by fear is this tension not presented and by sadness is the eyelid relaxed, slightly closed. Is hard to control or to manipulate with lower eyelid, so if is the tensed down eyelid presented in facial expression, almost a sign of real anger.

The anger mouth can vary by look, but is ever tensed. The lips can be pressed together or not, but are never relaxed.

The closed mouth is often presented in beginning stage of anger. At this situation is the person unable to speak or articulate, so the main goal is to present his face as “ready for fight”.
